Earlier in the season, United’s miserable season saw them knocked out of both the Champions League and the Carabao Cup.
The most losses the Red Devils have had since the 1989–1990 campaign are 12 in the Premier League and 17 in all other competitions.
Even though United’s 4-3 victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup quarterfinal gave the team much-needed confidence, Ten Hag’s team was unable to sustain the momentum they had following the international break. Only a few days later, the team was unlucky to escape with a point against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium before suffering a heartbreaking late loss to Chelsea.
Twenty-time English champions United are currently 12 points behind Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in fourth position in the Premier League rankings, ahead of their home match against Liverpool. United still has two games remaining.
Ferdinand questioned the club’s progress under Ten Hag this term in a speech on TNT Sports (via Metro).
Ten Hag, according to the former England international, “would say that he’s trying to keep his job.”He wouldn’t say anything different, in my opinion. However, the reality remains that Manchester United has not progressed beyond their position at the conclusion of the previous campaign.
“The season hasn’t turned out at all what I had anticipated while I was sitting there. Even if there have been numerous injuries, the team we have currently is not nearly as good as it was on opening day.
I’m a little worried about that. Though injuries are inevitable, you have to deal with them, and they haven’t handled them as well as other teams have.
In the match against the Merseysiders on Sunday, Ferdinand voiced optimism that United may put on a strong showing and secure an unexpected victory.
“Manchester United vs. Liverpool is the one game tomorrow,” the 45-year-old continued. My heart begs for you to please, I’m only hoping. I’m wishing now. I am putting in all the work. It’s difficult for Man Utd to accept the outcome right now.
“I want to witness a complete response from the start, show Liverpool what they’re in for, and come out of the blocks flying.”It’s critical for United to get off to a strong start and warn their fierce opponents that they are going to face a difficult battle, according to the six-time Premier League champion.
