Southampton are reportedly eyeing Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl, with TEAMtalk claiming the Saints are “confident” of securing his services.
Sheffield Wednesday had a rough start to the season but have since turned things around, currently sitting 9th in the Championship, just five points shy of the play-offs. Their recent success is largely attributed to manager Danny Rohl, who has been a key figure since joining last season, helping the Owls avoid relegation with a dramatic escape.
Rohl’s impressive work has caught the attention of Southampton, who are reportedly confident in securing him as their next head coach following Russell Martin’s dismissal. According to TEAMtalk, Rohl is interested in making the step up to the Premier League, and Southampton is eager for him to take over immediately.
While Rohl is highly regarded in the football world, Sheffield Wednesday’s management expects him to make the jump to the Premier League soon, whether with Southampton or another club.
Earlier in the summer, Rohl was linked with a move to Sunderland, but after speculation over his future, he signed a long-term contract extension with Sheffield Wednesday. If Southampton, or any Premier League club, formally approaches, they would need to meet his release clause, but that would likely not be an issue.
Rohl’s potential return to Southampton would not be unfamiliar territory for the German. He previously served as assistant manager to Ralph Hasenhuttl at Southampton from December 2018 to August 2019. After leaving Southampton, he worked with Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich and later joined Flick’s coaching staff with the German national team before taking the helm at Sheffield Wednesday.
