Crystal Palace struck early in the fourth minute but fell short of their first semi-final since 2012.
Oliver Glasner expressed disappointment in his Crystal Palace players for showing Arsenal “too much respect,” stating their performance made winning “impossible.”
Palace were aiming for their first Carabao Cup semi-final since 2012 but narrowly missed out after a 3-2 loss at the Emirates. Jean-Philippe Mateta gave the Eagles an early lead in the fourth minute, and former Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah scored late for Palace. However, a hat-trick from Gabriel Jesus sealed the win for Arsenal.
“It was a perfect start,” Glasner said of Mateta’s early goal. “But we needed a performance at our top level. To be honest, it wasn’t. In the first half, we played with too much respect for Arsenal. We lost the ball too easily, played too slowly, and didn’t demand the ball enough.”
Glasner also voiced frustration over Arsenal’s second goal, which appeared to be offside. However, VAR is only used from the semi-finals onwards in the Carabao Cup, leaving no option to review the decision. “I think it was offside,” Glasner said. “But there is no VAR, and everyone knows this.”
Reflecting on the match, Glasner admitted his team made too many errors. “They had too many chances in the second half, and we gave them those chances. It was just a matter of time before they scored. We were a bit too cautious and made too many mistakes,” he concluded.
