Southampton’s manager interest sparks calls to ‘Sellotape him to a chair’

Southampton, with their Premier League survival hanging by a thread before Christmas, are left managerless, directionless, and adrift after Russell Martin’s inevitable departure.

Good luck to whoever replaces Russell Martin at Southampton, as they’ll likely need it. With the club’s Premier League survival hanging by a thread, the Saints are looking for a manager, prioritizing free agents over those currently under contract at other clubs. This approach aims to avoid costly negotiations and immediate outlays, allowing a new manager to step in right away.

Among the candidates, Southampton is reportedly interested in former Roma boss Ivan Juric and the underrated Kasper Hjulmand, who left his role with Denmark earlier this year. However, if Juric and Hjulmand decline the offer, Southampton has more expensive alternatives in mind, including Carlos Corberan, who has a £2.5 million release clause with West Brom. They are also considering Danny Rohl, the 35-year-old German who has done wonders with Sheffield Wednesday, guiding them to the Championship’s top ten after taking over a struggling team.

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder David Prutton, impressed by Rohl’s tactical expertise, has urged the club to do everything possible to keep him. He joked that the club might need to “Sellotape Danny Rohl to a chair” to prevent him from leaving, a suggestion that highlights the strong bond between Rohl and the team’s recent success.

Despite Prutton’s playful words, it’s clear why he’s hoping Southampton looks elsewhere. Rohl’s impact at Sheffield Wednesday has been remarkable, especially considering his arrival when the team was in a perilous position. After taking over a side that was winless in ten games, Rohl turned their fortunes around, just as Southampton now needs someone to spark a similar turnaround.

Simon Jordan, former chairman of Crystal Palace, understands why Southampton is eyeing Rohl. He praised Rohl for guiding Sheffield Wednesday out of trouble and believes he could be the right person to help Southampton regain momentum in the Premier League. However, the Saints will face stiff competition if they decide to pursue him.
