Newcastle United are reportedly keeping a close eye on James McAtee’s situation at Manchester City. The talented playmaker has found game time hard to come by under Pep Guardiola, despite some underwhelming performances from senior players in City’s squad this season.
After an impressive loan spell with Sheffield United last season, the 22-year-old has managed just 26 minutes across three Premier League appearances this term. Newcastle, in search of a left-footed attacking midfielder for the right wing, view McAtee as a potential solution. Eddie Howe has deployed Joelinton and Harvey Barnes in the role, but neither is ideally suited to the position.
Additionally, Miguel Almiron’s uncertain future could leave a gap in the squad. The Paraguayan, once Newcastle’s record signing at £21m, might exit in January or wait until his contract expires in the summer to explore his options.
According to the *Daily Mail*, McAtee is valued at around £25m, a fee City could reinvest to strengthen their squad. However, Guardiola has hinted that departures in January are unlikely due to injuries and a thin squad. Speaking to Amazon Prime, Guardiola expressed the need for reinforcements but acknowledged the challenges of the winter market.
Meanwhile, Newcastle remains interested in Southampton teenager Tyler Dibling. The 17-year-old forward caught Eddie Howe’s attention after scoring a hat-trick for Southampton’s U23s at St. James’ Park at just 16 years old. Dibling, who briefly joined Chelsea in 2022 before returning to Southampton, has made 12 starts and scored two goals this season. However, the Saints are unlikely to sanction his departure in January.
With McAtee and Dibling on their radar, Newcastle continues to explore options to strengthen their squad and maintain their upward trajectory under Eddie Howe.
