Newcastle United have regained their form following this month’s 4-2 loss to Brentford.
Newcastle United delivered a statement performance last weekend, thrashing Leicester City 4-0 before defeating Brentford 3-1 in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. Their progression to the semi-finals has reignited hopes of ending their long trophy drought under Eddie Howe.
Howe came close to Carabao Cup glory in 2023, reaching the final only to lose to Manchester United. However, his current focus shifts back to the Premier League as Newcastle prepare to face Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday.
Ipswich, nicknamed the Tractor Boys, have struggled in the Premier League, winning only two of their 16 matches and sitting in the relegation zone. Despite their poor form, they’ll feel encouraged by their recent 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
BBC pundit Chris Sutton remains unconvinced about Ipswich’s chances. Citing their dismal home record, he predicts Newcastle will claim a 2-1 win. “It worked for Ipswich last week when they beat Wolves, but I don’t think it will have the same effect this time,” Sutton said, referring to his lighthearted mention of an Ipswich fan.
Sutton also highlighted Newcastle’s potential to rise up the table during the busy festive period. “Newcastle are 12th and have been very average at times, but they feel like a team in a false position. If they click, they could quickly push towards the top four,” he said.
While Newcastle’s inconsistency has been an issue, their dominant displays against Wolves and Brentford show what they’re capable of. They’ll need to maintain their intensity this weekend to secure all three points at Portman Road.
