Former Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt manager signs contract through end of 2025–2026 season
Oliver Glasner has been appointed as Crystal Palace’s new manager, two hours before they are scheduled to play Everton on Monday night. Roy Hodgson resigned as manager “due to recent circumstances” so that “the club can plan ahead.”
Hodgson needed medical attention after feeling ill during a training session on Thursday and underwent tests in hospital for two days before being released. Hodgson is believed to have been on the verge of being fired following a poor run of results that culminated in a 3-1 loss to Chelsea in his 200th game as Palace manager. Following the former England manager’s illness, Palace was forced to postpone a press conference. On Monday, the club said that the 76-year-old is “out of hospital and doing well.”
“This club holds great significance for me and has greatly influenced my football career,” Hodgson declared in a statement posted on Palace’s website to announce his departure.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my six seasons here because it has allowed me to work with elite players and staff every day, doing what I love.” But, I recognize that, in light of recent events, it might be wise for the team to make plans ahead of time. For this reason, I have decided to step down, allowing the team to move forward with their summertime plans to appoint a new manager.
An hour after Hodgson’s exit was verified, Glasner—the former head coach of Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt—was named the team’s new manager.
He signed a contract last week that will take him through 2026 with an option for an additional year. He was seen at Tottenham’s match against Wolves on Saturday before Palace’s trip to north London on March 2. It is thought that Parish and sporting director Doug Freedman met with the 49-year-old Austrian on Friday at a hotel in London to finalize the specifics of his contract.
“I’m thrilled to have Oliver join the group. With his stellar track record, we think he’s the best manager to lead the team at this critical juncture,” Parish said.
“We think Oliver’s drive and his exciting, attacking style are the ideal combination for getting the most out of our talented young squad for the balance of this Premier League season and beyond. Oliver has found success quickly everywhere he has gone in his managerial career.”
“I am very happy to join Crystal Palace as manager,” Glasner continued. Working with the brilliant team, getting to know the club’s supporters, and experiencing the atmosphere at Selhurst Park—of which I have heard so much—all excite me. Meeting Steve and Dougie has been enjoyable, and I am looking forward to collaborating with them to reach our objectives.
In addition, Palace said that assistants Ray Lewington and Paddy McCarthy will lead the team at Goodison Park, albeit both may go with Hodgson. After leaving Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of the previous season, Glasner has been unemployed. He will be in charge of Palace’s match against Burnley the following weekend, and Emanuel Pogatetz, a former Middlesbrough defender, is anticipated to be a member of his backroom staff.
With his resignation, Hodgson’s lengthy career—which has included 22 different management positions in eight different countries—is likely coming to an end. He continued, “I would like to thank my coaching staff and backroom team who have helped me so much along the way, as well as Steve Parish and his American partners for their support.”
“A special thank you goes out to my longtime friend and assistant, Ray Lewington; coaches Paddy McCarthy and Dean Kiely; and the outstanding departments of sports science, video analysis, and medicine. The present group of players has been a pleasure to work with; they are a credit to the club and themselves. Please accept my gratitude and respect.
“My sincere gratitude is extended to Ray Lewington, my lifelong friend and assistant; coaches Paddy McCarthy and Dean Kiely; and the excellent departments of sports science, video analysis, and medicine. It has been a joy working with the current crop of players; they are both a credit to the club and themselves. Please accept my appreciation and deference.
Parish said, “Roy has a special place in Crystal Palace history and this will never be forgotten.” Parish had previously appointed Hodgson to a one-year deal in March after reappointing him as an interim replacement for Patrick Vieira. He rejoined us over a year ago to calm the ship after four years leading the team to Premier League status year after year, and he did a fantastic job. It says volumes about his dedication to our club that he then consented to continue in the summer.
To put it plainly, Roy is the reason we are still in the Premier League. It’s safe to assume that Roy has the keys to Selhurst Park and will always be welcome back. I would like to thank Roy very much for his service and wish him the best in the future.
