Oliver Glasner takes over as manager of Crystal Palace following Roy Hodgson’s resignation.

Roy Hodgson has been replaced at Crystal Palace by Oliver Glasner, who led Eintracht Frankfurt to victory in the Europa League in 2021–2022.

Oliver Glasner: 'Secret' Crystal Palace talks revealed as Roy Hodgson makes 'offer' ahead of Everton clash

Oliver Glasner has been appointed as Crystal Palace’s new manager, two hours before they are scheduled to play Everton on Monday night. Roy Hodgson resigned as manager “due to recent circumstances” so that “the club can plan ahead.”

After feeling ill during a training session on Thursday, Hodgson needed medical attention and underwent tests in the hospital for two days before being released. It is understood that Hodgson was on the verge of being fired due to a poor run of results that culminated in a 3-1 loss to Chelsea in his 200th game as Palace manager. The former England manager became ill, forcing Palace to postpone a press conference. The 76-year-old is now “out of hospital and doing well,” the club confirmed on Monday.

In a statement posted on the Palace website to announcing his resignation, Hodgson said, “This club is very special and means so much to me and has played a big part in my footballing life.”

“Having had the opportunity to work with elite athletes and staff every day while doing what I love, I have thoroughly enjoyed my six seasons here. I have chosen to step down, nevertheless, as I recognize that given the current situation, it might be wise for the team to make plans ahead of time. This will allow the team to move forward with their summertime plans to choose a new manager.

An hour after Hodgson’s exit was verified, Glasner—the former head coach of Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt—was named the team’s new manager.

He signed a contract last week that will take him through 2026 with an option for an additional year. He was seen at Tottenham’s match against Wolves on Saturday before Palace’s trip to north London on March 2. It is thought that Parish and sporting director Doug Freedman met with the 49-year-old Austrian on Friday at a hotel in London to finalize the specifics of his contract.

Oliver joins the club with my sincere welcome. We think he is the best manager to lead the team at this critical juncture because of his stellar record, Parish added.

Oliver has found success quickly wherever he has gone in his managerial career, and we think his desire and his dynamic, attacking style are ideal for making the most of our young, talented team for the balance of this Premier League season and beyond.

“I am very happy to join Crystal Palace as manager,” Glasner continued. Working with the brilliant team, getting to know the club’s supporters, and experiencing the atmosphere at Selhurst Park—of which I have heard so much—all excite me. Meeting Steve and Dougie has been enjoyable, and I am looking forward to collaborating with them to reach our objectives.

While both could go with Hodgson, Palace also declared that assistants Ray Lewington and Paddy McCarthy will lead the club to Goodison Park. Glasner, who has been unemployed since leaving Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of the previous season, will be in charge of Palace’s match against Burnley the following weekend. Emanuel Pogatetz, a former Middlesbrough defender, is anticipated to be a member of his coaching team.

With his resignation, Hodgson’s lengthy career—which has included 22 different management positions in eight different countries—is likely coming to an end. He continued, “I would like to thank my coaching staff and backroom team who have helped me so much along the way, as well as Steve Parish and his American partners for their support.”

A special thank you goes out to coaches Dean Kiely and Paddy McCarthy, as well as the outstanding sports science, video analysis, and medical departments. Ray Lewington has been a longtime friend and assistant of mine. My gratitude and admiration go out to the current group of players, who have been a pleasure to work with and who represent the club and themselves with distinction.

“I have no doubt that our supporters will stick by the squad through the rest of the current campaign and beyond. I’m sure the season will end well, and I hope the squad has the best results in the upcoming days, weeks, and months.
Parish said, “Roy has a special place in Crystal Palace history and this will never be forgotten.” Parish had previously appointed Hodgson to a one-year deal in March after reappointing him as an interim replacement for Patrick Vieira. He rejoined us over a year ago to calm the ship after four years leading the team to Premier League status year after year, and he did a fantastic job. It says volumes about his dedication to our club that he then consented to continue in the summer.

To put it plainly, Roy is the reason we are still in the Premier League. It’s safe to assume that Roy has the keys to Selhurst Park and will always be welcome back. I would like to thank Roy very much for his service and wish him the best in the future.
